tub drain connection

I need to reattach my bathtub's drain release lever. I removed the old one, and there wasnt a cord or connection piece that I noticed. Is there an easy way to re-hook this up?

Before going to the access door, get a coat hainger and maks a small hook an one end. try to feel your way on to the linkage and pull.
