Closet flange hub threads onto 3" drain pipe, and is screwed down onto previously linoleumed subfloor (I replaced bad area about 2x3" area surrounding the toilet so it is bare plywood). There is NO play in the pipe to allow it to move upwards. I will be installing hardibacker and standard 6 or 12" ceramic tile, which will raise the finished floor 1/2 to 3/4" above the flange.

Googling reveals two possible solutions: get a flange extender kit to raise the flange, or just use an extra plain wax ring over the one with the horn.

That should read, a plain wax ring on the flange, and then drop a wax ring with horn over the top, then drop the bowl down.
Some say that extra wax is sufficient; some say that it is a band-aid that will eventually allow leakage.

Any experience or preferences - what say you?

Extra wax has been used often, but is not ideal. That inch or more of wax between the flange and the bottom of the porcelain..is vulnerable to blowout, puncture by auger, sagging, etc. In my opinion, a stack of 1/4" thick flange extenders is preferred.

thanks jimbo - you 594 sailor you.

726 class and 688 class, myself.

Such is the stuff that submariners are made of . . .

I've used the Fluidmaster waxless seal with success.
I push the seal onto the bowl first, and then drop the bowl down.

If you use the Fluidmaster waxless seal, push it onto the bottom of the bowl first.

IF you go the double wax ring route, and it would be my preference if the flange is not replaced, then use the "extended" one on TOP of the regular one, not under it.
