Hello from Nevada. The water here in bad. However, we live with a river on our property that has mountain water running by rather than basin water. We want to drive a sandpoint near the river and draw water from that source. The river rises from time to time, so we can't put the pump too close to the river. How far can a shallow well pump (1/2 horse or 3/4) pull water horizonally? The lift would be approx. 12 feet. I would like to put the pump approx. 100 feet away from the sandpoint. (Mostly horizonal) A simple question the experts have no answer to. Thanks.. Hawkeye

That's going to depend on the size of the pipe, the length of the pipe and to some extent the type of pipe and whether the horizontal run is level or runs downhill or up hill for that matter. Google "pipe friction loss" and you will get the charts for developed length and equivalent loss.

A jet pump can 'lift' water a max of 25' at sea level. In the real world that gets to be more like 21 or 22'' or so but... You have your elevation above sea level and then 12' of elevation up to where you want the pump so you're left with the difference minus the friction loss of the pipe and fittings. So IMO it ain't gunna work especially with a 100' of pipe even if you used 1.25" PE pipe.

And you can't have the pipe run uphill from the pump back to the well or you won't be able to prime the pump.

Fallon Nevada is 3900 or so feet ASL. so the std. deduction in lift is 1 foot for each 1000 feet in other words you should be able to draw close to 23 feet but since you are only drawing 12 feet that should be fine. I would keep the suction line at least 1-1/4" poly pipe, 1-1/2" would be better
