I have a house with two wells. One is a deep drilled well that is the main water source for our home, the other is the original hand dug well for the property which is about 12 ft deep located inside a well house which we were told when we bought the property was now used an irrigation well, but was hooked up to a broken pump. We are now told that in order to be "official" we have to have a working pump, or the well has to be decommissioned at an approx cost of $2500-$3000. I assume making it work is going to cost less than closing it up. My Question is what is the least expensive way to comply in terms of pump, any other equipment and installation and it's approx cost. Many Thanks.

Good Question, I don't know it's Kitsap County. Probably not, but I'll have to check. If they do that's the way right? But if they don"t?

What type pump do you have now? It should be easy to replace with the same kind and size pump.

It was broken, we weren't using it, so I took it out. But it originally served as the water supply for the whole house with a pressure tank etc. And I'm thinking to replace what was there then is going to be more than whats needed now.
I do remember it was some type of Sear's Jet Pump.

I'm just thinking that cost wise, if they will go for it, a hand pump would be the way to go. Otherwise and god forgive me for saying this, get the cheapest jet pump Home depot sells and a 20 gallon bladder tank. Unless you plan to actually use the thing regularly why spend a lot of money.

I totally agree, I still need to check with the county about a hand pump, although I doubt that they will buy that for irrigation.
The well is encased in concrete, at least at the top, with a concrete cover and a plastic pipe going into it from the top where the old pump was connected. If I get a cheap jet pump and bladder is the plumbing and electrical pretty straight forward?

Have you thought about abandoning it yourself? A crock well is easy. Just get the information from your local officials. Generally you just layer sand and bentonite. Then knock the thing into its self about three foot below ground. My mom and myself just did hers. About $300. We had sand. We filled out log as owners.

I'm pretty sure Washington State requires Well decommissioning to be done by someone licensed by them. (Driller's,etc) but I will check on that too. Another problem with that however, is that this well sits inside a well house with a concrete slab floor, a large (approx 3ft. dia.) concrete top above the slab with about a 1ft dia. access hole. So I could pour sand and stuff into the hole but I have no idea how I could Knock it in on itself.

Most of the time the home owner has the right but, it has to code. We broke ours in with the back-hoe bucket. We did have to document for the county. A log, they helped us fill it out.

Thanks, I will check on it but I couldn't get to it with a back hoe without tearing down the well house.which houses the tank etc. for the main well. At this point it looks like the best option is the cheap-o pump and bladder.
