I have a home with the, I believe, original pressure tank (on a rural well system) from 1973. I am having uneven water pressure in the house (always some, but going from weak to strong to weak...) I tried testing the tank with a tire gauge and got nothing. I tried adding air with a bike pump and the pump shows 35-50 pounds but again the separate gauge reads nothing and when I try releasing air by pressing the valve, nothing comes out.

Is it likely I need a new pressure tank? I'm suspecting I do, but am wondering if there's anything else I can check first. I do have water, so the pump is working fine.

Also since the house is over 35 years old, I assume I'll need a professional out to install the new tank since the fittings probably need to be changed and the current ones are probably quite rusted and such. I'm thinking, though, I might buy a tank myself and just hire a well person to install it. Or would a regular plumber be better to do the pressure tank?

Also one well person I talked to says Conaire is the best brand in his eyes. That's what I have now. I read an old post on this forum, I believe, saying to stay away from Conaire. Since my tank has lasted me over 35 years, I'd appreciate hearing reasons anyone dislikes (or likes, for that matter) Conaire, and/or what brands people recommend. Thank you.
