Push Button Diverter

I installed an aqua source single handle tub and shower faucet with a push button diverter last fall. The push button diverter flew apart a few weeks ago, I have attempted to replace it with a Delta push button diverter since they look the same. The diverter doesn't work, when you push it in it does not divert the water to the shower head. Anyone have any idea what my issue might be?

The obvious answer is that even though the Delta diverter LOOKS the same it must not be, or you installed it incorrectly. The Delta diverter DOES have a top and bottom side.
