Toto Clayton (brand new) clogging constantly

Hello,

We just did a complete remodel on our bathroom. Because of all the great reviews we read on this site and others, we splurged for the Toto Clayton, which matched our theme and also was supposed to perform above average. Since the very beginning of use, it will not flush solids completely 90% of the time and clogs. It then needs to be plunged to work properly again.

We are novices in home repair and really are not sure what to do next. I have seen some things on-line about the amount of water, the size of the pipe (4" vs. 3") in older homes (our home built in late 80's), the flap, etc. Does anyone have any experience or advice with this problem that might help us? Our experience with Toto so far has been very disappointing and we are hoping we can find a solution.

Ive found, toys, balls, whole thing of garlic, towels, toothbrushes, bones, dildo, broken glass,

The symptoms sound like you have something lodged in the trapway or perhaps in the drain. Could be something from the construction.

Sometimes construction workers will use the bowl for a waste bin.
Remove the waste, and it works fine.

one time Jamie did an install and when he was done he picked up all the garbage, tossed it in the bowl, flipped the lever and loaded his tools up in the van.
He got fifteen minutes down the road and the homeowner called.
Plugged toilet.

The former toilet was working fine and then we did the remodel, so maybe someone dropped something down the pipe, as a few of you have alluded to. We don't have children, so I don't think anything was thrown in it after the install. A couple of follow up questions:

It does work sometimes, so would it still flush liquids and paper waste if there was an obstruction?
Is there any way to tell if something is clogging it besides a snake or something like that?
Does the toilet have to be removed to check this?

Another little note: when it flushes, the water goes down and then it makes like a gulping or gurgling sound right before the toilet refills.

Toto's typically flush VERY fast, and at the last moment often make that gulp. If it is slow, there's a problem - probably something stuck or obstructed.

A common problem is if people use a wax ring with a funnel. If it isn't centered perfectly or is oversized, the act of setting the toilet can cause the opening to close up. If you used one of those, buy a new, plain wax ring, and re-set the toilet. If the flange is not on top of the new finished floor, buy a thick wax ring or double up two regular ones. Better yet, fix it to where it should be.
