This is my first post and first DIY plumbing job so please excuse my ignorance.

Here is the problem, I have a sink floor drain which is 1 1/4'' in size. I purchased a "floor drain kit" from HD for the install (screw together type). This is in a basement bathroom which also has a shower. The house was built in 1963 and there was no sink connected to this drain when I moved in so I had nothing to look at to duplicate. I connected the kit to the new sink (also 1 1/4'') and it drains no problems.

I thought everything was ok until I let the sink run for 5 minutes. Where the sink drain (black tube) meets the pipe fitting it began a very slow leak at the top of the white plastic fitting. It was leaking through the top very slow almost a drip. It appears after the sink runs for a while the water starts to back up partially past the p-trap back up to the black sink drain pipe. But not to the point where the sink backs up, it still drains fine. Not sure what is going on here. I have tried replacing washers in the end cap where it meets the sink drain with no luck. Tried a different lock cap with no luck still leaks out the top after a few minutes.

Now I have no clue to about venting because I do not know what to look for, but do not smell any gas coming up.

I have attached a pic to see if something is wrong with the set-up. Have tried to modify set up with no luck after 5 trips to the store lol. Thanks for your time.

I see three and maybe four things wrong. First, you have an illegal S trap. Second, you are using a neoprene sleeve to make the drain connection. Third, there is no vent. Fourth, it appears you are connecting ABS to PVC. I don't think you can get a proper seal doing that. Pros will correct me on that if I'm wrong.

Floor Drain

I'll continue the critique, it is illegal hooking up a sink like that, there is probably a trap in the floor drain, that and the lack of a vent could be the cause of the water backing up. You need to cut into the wall and see if there is a pipe that you can hook into, leaving what you have is going to cause major grief!

WOW I kinda figured something major was wrong. That's what happens when you have no knowledge and trying to attempt it yourself. There are no other pipes coming out of the wall as this is in the basement. There is only the floor drain, which I think is directly linked to a shower drain I believe, as the shower is about two feet to the right of the sink. I used the sleeve because one side of the flexible PVC i had connected the long piece of PVC you see had no threads on either side.

Looks like I need to call a plumber, but how would he install the vent in the basement I'm just curious? What makes the "S" trap illegal? I really want this up to code as this is a new bathroom remodel. Also since the drain pipe is ABS does this mean I need ABS all the way down to the floor drain? Or is there ABS to PVC becuase I don't see 1 1/4'' ABS sold at HD.

Do you think I could use this for a vent?
Oatey No. 39012 Abs Cheater Vent

Seen it at HD

Getting a proper vent will be your biggest problem......the pro's will advise you not to use an AAV but you can take a look at this link and you might get some ideas....
