I have an American Standard Cadet 3 (thanks to this forum :)). The float was sticking...but now when float doesn't stick I can still hear water running inside tank. Don't know much about toilets, so if someone can please tell me where to check, picture attached below..... Also, we have well water so might have tiny rocks causing problem?? Thanks

Then you must have the leaking flapper that people are reporting.

American Standard flappers on the Cadet 3 and the Champion 4 are failing.

The black rubber on the Cadet 3 Flapper starts to blister, this one is six months old.

thanks Terry,.... but it sounds like the water is running from the float "thingy" not the flapper, also, the water in tank keeps filling/overflowing into overflow tube...??? thanks

If the flapper is failing, water is running out of the tank and into the bowl, therefore the ...."float thingy" is constantly in a position to trigger the valve to fill.

If the water in tank keeps filling/overflowing into overflow tube, then the shut off in not doing it's job.

Turn off the water to the tank, and see if the water level drops.
If it drops, you may need a flapper too.

If it holds water, look at the fill valve.

There was a small rock in the fill valve,... 5 min free and easy fix, Thanks Terry!!!

That's good news.

Keep on enjoying this excellent toilet! :)

I think I'd seriously consider a whole-house water filter and change the filters regularly.

Good point, that's the ugliest mess in a tank I've every seen. However, is the problem really oxidation of the house plumbing rather than the supply to the home? Afterall, quite a bit of the total water usage in a home goes through the toilet tank(s). If the pipe in the home is a mess a whole house filter won't fix it. (FWIW I've calculated my toilets as using nearly half of my monthly total.)
