Shut off and drain

Currently we have a well up at our cabin. The pressure tank sits in a pit outside of the actual cabin and each fall, after turning off the pump, we open a valve down at the bottom of this pit (about 6' deep) to allow the cabin and the tank itself to drain.

This has been a good practice for us for the nearly 20 years that we have had the setup. The problem is that all of us are getting older and we no longer have a strong desire to climb through the 20" access hole and skinny our way down next to the tank in order to reach this valve.

Anyone have suggestions on how we could remotely access this valve? I don't mind sticking a long rod down into the hole and catching onto something in order to open/shut the valve, but I just don't know where you would find this type of a product.

Something electric would be OK but would require us to get more electricity over into that area (where I don't believe there is any now ).

Hi - Sure, it is a copper 3/4" valve like you would see inside your home. I am thinking this would need to be replaced.

If the valve is underneath the 20" opening you could use a piece of pipe that is wider than the handle of the valve, cut a notch in it that is slightly wider than the handle, and use the notch in the pipe to open the valve and drain the tank and house down.

Or, cut notches into something (a galvanized female adapter) that will allow the 'legs' to go in between the 'spokes' of the round handle of the valve and screw it onto a long piece of 1/2"-1" pipe. Like sch 40 PVC.

Or change the boiler drain to a lever handled ball valve and rig the same type thing up for it to slip over the lever handle and twist the pipe to open/close the valve.
