I was planning to move my washing machine to the basement. (it's now on the first floor) However, I am concerned because my house is set on a steep hill --- and the basement is 10 feet BELOW "ground level." This means that the sewer line (and septic tank) into which the washer will drain are both ABOVE the basement floor.

How do I get my washer to drain upward? Is this possible? Am I in danger of having dirty water flow from the septic tank down into the washing machine? In short -- how do you get a washer to drain uphill??? Thanks for any help you guys can offer!!

Washing machines always "drain uphill" because the hose is hung into the drain pipe at a point higher than the machine. But you have two considerations. First how high will your maching pump water efficiently. That should be in the user's installation manual. Second, how high above the septic connection the washer's connection will be because if it is too low it will overflow in the event of a septic malfunction. When installed properly sewage water cannot enter the washing machine.
