My house was built in the 1950's. It is a ranch with a basement. The drains from each of the plumbed rooms (kitchen, full bath, half bath, laundry) run outside of the house and tie into the house sewer main. The kitchen and half bath are on the back side of the house. The line that these two rooms connects to is on the rear of the house runs around the side of the house and ties into the line that runs out of the front of the house and then to the city sewer main. Each line has a clean out in the basement and a cleanout outside the houe that was added later. Original house waste lines (including vents) are cast iron. The line on the backside (exterior lines are clay) has degraded to the point that it needs to be replaced. Waste lines leave the basement through the wall approx. 5 feet from the floor. The rear lines are higher than the front line (gravity flow to the street). Here are the questions:
1. Rather than replace the outside line, I would like to run new PVC from the rear rooms (kitchen, half bath, laundry) and connect to the line that exits the front. Is this advisable?
2. Can I tie the new PVC line into the cast cleanout or do I need to but the original cast to tie in?
3. Vents should be OK. Each room has it's own vent.
4. Can I cap and abandon the old clay line, or will it need to be removed (or is that determined by local code)?
This seems like it would be cheaper than digging up and replacing the outside line. I'd welcome any thoughts.
