What is the inside coating material for galvanized gas pipes?
It appears that hardware store mistakenly sold me a gas line to replace a cold water pipe. This resulted in a chemical smell when faucet is turned on.

Galvanized pipe is just black iron pipe that has been "hot" dipped in a galvanized
coating inside and out it is not "magic" for gas or water until it has been used for that purpose then it can only be used for the same use again,

if you have a funny taste it could be from thread cutting oil used to tread the piece of pipe or it could be something else, like thread dope etc,

Essentially, it may take awhile to flush out the crud. If it is cold water, it will take longer than hot water. It won't help your water/sewer bill, but maybe just open the valve fully and let it run for an hour or so and see what happens. If the pipe feeds more than one valve, open them all to maximize the flow, since most faucets are flow restricted. They say a quart of oil can pollute a million gallons of water, it doesn't take much.

Maybe a better question is why did you use galvanized pipe?

There is no "galvanized gas pipe". There is only galvanized pipe and it can be used for anything water, gas, drains, oil, or anything else. The only way it could have an "odor" would be if it was an old pipe which had been used for gas at one time.
