to use a lag screw to hold the toilet down instead of the flange bolts? If the flange is sitting on the floor and securely fastened with all 4 screws can you forgo the flange bolts and use lag screws through the toilet base into good subfloor with washers between the porcelain and the screw head?

Flange bolts are just to keep the toilet from moving. Flange bolts are not intended to pull the toilet down into the wax ring. You don't need and don't want to put much torque to whatever bolts you use. If you tighten too much, you'll be buying a new toilet. Why not use flange bolts the way they are intended?

The flange bolt slipped out (turned while tightening nut) and I do not want to remove the toilet. I actually felt the lag bolt was a better way to secure the toilet considering the flange is just plastic.

With most toilets, there's enough room to use a second nut (and washer) to hold the toilet bolt tight to the flange, then use the original one to hold the toilet to it. If it is tight, you may need to search out a thin nut, but they're available, too.

The lag screw is not breaking through the flange. It is going through the existing slot in the flange. Everything feels firm so I decided to go with it.
