The shut-off valve has been standing uncovered and drywall dust has been allowed into it from sanding. What damage could this do to the ball-valve shut-off or the appliance?

Thanks for any replies

You can turn the gas off at the meter (of course unless your gas company throws a fit) or if you have a ball valve after the meter as a main shutoff turn that off and then remove the "shut off" valve in question and shake it/pretty it up. Or use a shop vac and suck it all out, this could of course be done without shutting the gas off. Last but not least you could let the pressure of the gas blow it out. This is what I would probably do or shall I say have done and not had any call backs on it.

dust

Open the valve for a second and blow it out, without any flames in the area. The only problem it could cause if you do not remove the dust would be to plug up the pilot orifices, and they can be a nuisance to unplug.
