I have a fiberglass tub/shower with tile walls on a slab floor that is leaking somewhere. The baseboards in the bedroom next to the tub (at the rear end of the tub) have started to swell. I'm wondering where/how to start looking first. I dont see any obvious grout problems between the tile/tub, or could it be at the drain or faucet or all of the above? Looking for suggestion on what to try first before we start tearing up the baseboards and drywall in the bedroom to figure it out.

Thanks!

Steve

Yes....and now that you mention that, the valve makes this annoying high pitched squeal (most often when the shower is first engaged), but if you wiggle the handle it fades away.

I'd take off the handle and pull off the escuchion take a look see through there see if ya see any leks while its on

Do you know the make n model?

No leaks behind the handle that I can see. Its a Price Pfister J89 (I believe).

Thanks!

You have the escutchion off as well and are getting a good look at the valve?

How about the tub spout?
Is there and water coming out of the drain hole where the spout meets the wall?

Are there any seams, handles or, other places where the water may leak through?

-- No water coming out there

The very first place I would look would be the gasket behind the tub at the overflow plate. -- Well, I removed the overflow plate, but I cant really tell if its leaking out that gasket, as I cant see the other side (I would have to cut a hole in the drywall in the closet behind the tub/shower).

I should also mention that the primary user is my son who takes long showers, the tub is rarely filled, if ever, to the overflow. We were thinking the leak may be coming somewhere along the top of the tub and tile, but the grout looks ok.

A followup to my problem. I decided to go ahead and remove the damaged base boards and small section of drywall that got wet. I was able to get a view of the tub at that point and determined the water was leaking where the tile hits the top of the tub, even though the grout looks ok, its not giving a water tight seal. I caulked all around tub and that seems to have solved it.

Thanks
