I am installing a new bathroom vanity. The tail piece is 1 1/4 and the ABS at the wall is 1 1/2.

Is it best to use a 1 1/2 trap and adapt it at the tail piece or use a 1 1/4 trap with a 1 1/2 to 1 1/4 adapter at the wall? Or, does it even matter?

Thanks

While the flow caracteristics of the 1 1/2" trap are better it may not always fit.

Either is fine.

It is immaterial which way you do it. Most times I use a 1 1/2" trap with the reducing slip joint washer on the inlet, but if it is not in a cabinet then I use a 1 1/4" chrome one with the reducer at the trap adapter in the wall.
