Replacing central stack (?!)

We have a leak in the basement of our 1835 home and are told it's coming from somewhere in the central stack...and that the stack needs to be replaced.

Two questions;
1. Approximate cost
2. How much damage to walls, etc (having a hard time picturing how this thing would get replaced and reattached without tearing multiple holes in walls and tile.)

BTW: this diagnosis of needed replacement came based on the fact that turning water on at different sources all yielded a leak into the basement.

To tell what is leaking and the condition of the stack walls will have to be opened up to see it. It may be one bad piece that has split or, the whole thing may be bad.

This is a good use for a Ridgid Micro See-Snake to narrow down where the leak is ocurring as it can inspect through a drill hole. Once the actual leak is found a wall can be opened and a determination of the rest of the pipes condition may be made.

Without seeing where the stack is in the house and the material it could be between $100 and a few grand.

Like Redwood said, have it inspected with a camera and figure out where the leak is.

Depending on where it is and how it sits, it might be easier to replace it with either ABS or even new cast iron.

This sounds like a job for a professional as well. Get a few quotes then go from there.
