We are replacing a bath vanity and faucet. The new drain assembly is plastic, and our piping is chrome plated brass. Do we just use the brass nut and washer as we would for a brass to brass connection?

Also, the vanity instructions specified silicon caulk rather than plumber's putty. I bought 100% clear silicon rather than silicon caulk. Are they interchangeable?

Thanks in advance! I got great help here a couple of months ago on a toilet question (Toto Eco Drake successfully installed last night!)

Yes on the drain connection.

I assume the product you have is 100@ silicone adhesive caulk compound. You would want to use one that is rated as "kitchen/bath" or "tub/tile" for mildew issues.

The manufacturer may be suggesting silicone because petroleum based putty may discolor the sink material.

Thanks Jimbo. Yes - the silicon recommendation is due to discoloration from plumber's putty.

So I have both 100% silicone and acrylic latex caulk plus silicone to choose from. Neither say kitchen/bath or tub/tile but the ALEX Plus does say mildew resistant. I'll go with that.

Use 100 % silicone,ALEX is for outdoor trim caulking.
DO NOT use ALEX on your drain.

This is what I would use...

Gotcha. Will use the 100% silicone. Had put ALEX last night and of course it's leaking. Will fix that.

Would you use teflon tape on plastic threaded pipe, or not? Only if it's leaking?

I would not use teflon tape on slip joint connections.

I would use it on thread connections.
