I've seen more than one way to connect the cold supply to a manifold and hot water heater.

Is there any reason not to do it the "obvious" way (and the way shown in manufacturer's manuals)?

Obvious(?) way: 3/4" or 1" cold supply into the manifold, 3/4" exiting the manifold and into the hot water tank. 1/2" branches from the manifold as usual.

I saw a manifold done on TV where the cold supply line was split with a tee, then both ends of the manifold were fed. I can only think it is some way to improve pressure/flow. I'm 99% sure this was for potable, and not for radiant heating.
