We live in an old house (1795) which was converted from one large house to 2 "half-houses" in the late 1980s.
We were in need of a new toilet a couple of years ago for our upstairs bath, hired a plumber who looked at the bathroom, measured, ordered the toilet, and installed it.
I was horrified when I came home to find that he had cut away a section of our heating unit (baseboard - forced hot water) which was behind the toilet to fit the new unit. He told my husband it was the only way to make the toilet fit.
We have since adpoted a new kitten, and this is unacceptable, as the inside heating unit is exposed, and the edges of the cut baseboard are sharp. We have been stuffing towels all around the cuts to protect her, but this will not work now that cold weather is here.
We had another plumber look at this recently, and asked if he could either shorten the heating unit, or replace the toilet (we can use this one downstairs). He said no one makes toilets with clearance like that from the wall. The base of the toilet would need to clear 3 1/2" from the wall, as that is the depth of the baseboard heating unit.
I know it is not ideal to have a heating unit behind a toilet, but other than ripping up the entire bathroom floor (old wide pine) to redo the pipes - a very expensive job, we are trying to just find a toilet that sticks out enough like our old one did to allow us to use the same footprint, and just replace the cut baseboard with a new one.
Does anyone know if there are any toilets on the market that would fit the bill?
