Can I Make This Sink Work?

It's 12" W X 13 1/2" D. The faucet is integrated, that is, the faucet and sink are all porcelain, one piece. The hot and cold handles are seperate and can be removed. There are holes all the way around the under part of the rim, (like a toilet?). The drain is integrated, that is, it is porcelain as well and there are holes in it to allow the water to exit the basin. Underneath, the drain measures inside diameter of 2 1/4" and outside diameter of 3". It is designed to be wall mounted, best I can tell.
SO...this is a sink right? It looks like my biggest problem is finding a way to mount the p-trap to the drain. I'm not very experienced, but I've never seen a drain like this, with no stopper, and no way to mount the p-trap. The drain is not threaded underneath, it is just porcelain.
Can Anyone Help?

You need to install a pop-up assembly in that drain opening. I still see them sinks around here in the Chicago land area. Some are made by Crane, and others where made by "Standard". I even have replacement parts for the faucet. The first pic is probably what you have with the pop up installed. The second pic has a chrome spout but missing the pop up so the drain opening most likely looks similar.Third picture is a cleaner one of the Crane sink.

Any possibility you can post some pictures? I am having a hard time visualizing what your drain/tailpiece looks like based on your description. It sounds as if your sink has a built-in 2-1/2 porcelain tailpiece or something.

I appreciate your reply

However, there is no single large hole where the drain is. The drain is integrated, all porcelain with small holes for water drainage. The entire basin is solid. Thus, there is no pop up assembly to pull to activate a stop to trap water in the basin. This thing reminds me of a prison sink, it has no extra parts and the small holes for the drain make me think they didn't want the prisoners putting anything large down the drain. And the lack of a moveable pop up assembly prevents the prisoner from dislodging it and using it as a weapon or something. The closest is your picture number 2, integrated faucet, hot handle, cold handle, no pop up, but where the big drain hole is, mine is porcelain with smaller holes (about 12 or so holes, at 1/4" diameter). From beneath the sink, looking up the drain, there is a 2 1/4 I/D and 3" O/D integrated porcelain "pipe" that is 2 or 3" long. Again my biggest concern is how to connect the p-trap to this "pipe" that is not threaded and is not a standard size.

Gardner is right

it is a built in porcelain tailpiece. I could make this easier if i knew the terminology. I do know that in normal sinks, you put a piec down from the top with a gasket and secure it fom below, making a water tight connection. This sink, there is no large hole to put the gasket and drain pipe down through, just the smaller 1/4" holes.

just found this picture, my sink, if it is a sink, has holes in the bottom somewhat similar to this, hopes this image helps and i will get pics of my sink up later.

"sink"

That reminds me of the maintenance man for a local radio station. He called me and said the sink was plugged. When I asked him which sink, he said, "You know the one you brush your teeth in." His was a urinal and so is yours. The drain takes a 1 1/2" closet spud and a tailpiece.

sink/urinal?

here is a link to a album of pictures of the sink we have...i was told it was a shaving sink found in a boarding house for boys...i have seen antique prison sinks that have these holes in the drain and i would imagine that a urinal wouldn't need a faucet and a hot and cold one at that so any advice or help on attaching a p trap or equal to this would be appreciated thanks

A spud fitting would work as that is what it is designed for.

I just was reading my Chicago Plumbing code book, There is a section about all drains except water closets and some hospital sinks all must have a steal strainer, including floor drains. I am not saying your sink is not allowed where you are just in Chicago. It would not hurt to double check with your local codes to ensure you can use that sink.

I honestly like that sink a lot. It is very sharp looking. I do hope it is allowed by you and you get the spud for the drain.

Ok after hooking up the water supply to the sink we have been posed with a new problem...the water will come out of the faucet for a short period of time and then stops and only cascades around the bowl of the sink like a toilet...any ways to re direct or plug the holes??? any help is greatly appreciated

I thought the drain was going to be the least of your worries. The stems and faucet connections would seem to be in need of TLC.

more detailed pictures

ok we have disassembled our faucet there are a few pictues of what we found inside. we also think that we have located a date on the back of what we think is feb 13 1954 possibly we can see ten different numbers each time we etch the print. there is no name to be found anywhere on the sink. can anyone recomend a way to make the spout end fource more water out the faucet spout and less out the holes around the brim of the sink..or any recomedation where we can buy these replacement parts. thanks everyone
