Hello:

I'm putting in a new downstairs bathroom under the guidance of a licensed plumber friend. He learned from his father and can do anything with pipe, however his recommendations don't always meet code from what I'm seeing on this forum. This leaves me with a few questions to make sure the installation is correct. I'm in rural Upstate NY.

Can I use a 3x3x2 Y + a 1/8 bend topside on the 45* portion of a jog in a 3" vertical waste stack? This is to bring the 2" line parallel and tight to the stack as both must pass up through a 6" wide notch in a 12x12 beam. The lav. will tie into the 2" line for it's drain and vent. With the understanding that the 45* portion of the 3" drain is considered vertical, this seems preferable to using a 3x3x2 santee and taking it back around and then up.

I'm planning a horizontal drain for a utility sink, a tub/shower, and a WC, with a common vent coming up through a stud wall parallel to this drain, all 3 fixtures to be within 5' of this vent. In what sequence should these fixtures be connected in relation to the vent? Must the drain lie directly under the stud wall so the vent rises over It's center line or can it be out a ways with the Y rolled up to avoid a horizontal vent. The aforementioned 3" vertical waste stack will serve a future upstairs bath group and ties into this horizontal drain with a combo downstream from the WC. This common vent will tie into the aforementioned lav. riser on the upper floor above 42".

I hope this is clear enough without trying to draw it. It's an old post and (massive) beam house giving me strong suggestions (more like threats) about where and how to route things. Thanx.

If your licensed plumber friend is licensed in the state of NY he should now the code requirements for your area. As I always tell everyone if you are truly worried about what code applies to you, its best to ask the local Inspector, also its best to get permits and have the job inspected to ensure everything is being done correctly.
