Is a trap needed/required for basement shower stall? Drain is roughed in about 1 foot below concrete (1.5" pvc tapped into 3.25" main) Is direct connect w/ elbow up to shower drain o.k.? Thanx...

A trap prevents sewer gas from coming into the house along with sewer flies, and other nasty things...yes, you need a trap. But, you have a problem in that code requires a shower to have a 2" drain AND pipe. You cannot go from 2" to 1.5" back to something larger. So, to do this right, you may have to crack some concrete. The trap should be directly under the shower. The longer the drop to the trap, the more exposed crud can accumulate and fester to generate smells, too.

Fortunately for you, the problem has been discovered before the shower was complete. At this point it's mostly just a PITA, but doesn't require total demolition of the shower floor. FYI, everydrain must have a trap. Toilets have theirs built in, sinks have removable ones, and showers that are on slabs have permanent ones that are usually covered with concrete and are never accessed or opened.

Thanks. The pipe may be 2" (don't remember and I'm away from home). Luckily, I have about a 12 sq.in. area to work with as drain pipe was not covered during construction.
