I am in need of some expert advice, I have an out door hose bib that has spurng a leak, it looks like a red well pump handle and it reads "Merrill Mfg" on it, it is burried about four feet in the ground and the leak is at the bottom of the pipe. I have dug down to the joint where it connects to the vertical pipe and there is the leak. Now the question, how does all that connect? It is so far down that I can't get a good look. does anyone have a schematic or drawing that I can look at to get the parts?? I really need to get it fixed as soon as possible, it cost me 50.00 extra on the bill this month. Any direction I can take. Also, I live in the sticks and a plumber is miles and hours away. any help would be most appreciated...

Do you have a shut-off inside the house / basement to shut-off water to the hose bib? If not, you may want to install that first, so you can at least stop the leak right away before dealing with the more complicate fix outside.

hydrant

Turn off the water. Unscrew the hydrant. Cap the pipe. Turn the water back on. Then take the hydrant apart and find out what you need to repair it. You aren't going to be able to fix it in that little hole anyway.

You are going to go to a lot of work to remove this thing to repair it. Then you will have figure out what parts you need, chase them down, and finally reassemble the valve. IMHO, repairing this is not really very cost effective. I would consider just buying a new valve. Equally important however, you should determine why this developed a leak. 4 feet down is pretty deep to freeze and break, so I'd look for some other cause as well.
