how does the proximity sensor that flushes the thing get power?

The one's I'm familiar with (Toto) generate their own power with a small turbine. Some retrofits use a battery, but I have no experience with those.

There you have all the answers...

Toto has a battery but recharges it with a built in generator.
Some of the others use battery power and usually are good for a couple of years, yet others are hardwired...

Hey Redwood - Got any feedback to offer on the Toto's? They're showing up as spec on state gov't jobs these days. Not my department, but I am curious.

Thanks, folks. . .I always wondered about mixing water with electronics.

No not really...
Doing service only...
I haven't done anything with them...
I guess that says something though...
