dishwasher door won't open

when i move the dishwasher latch to open the door, something is preventing
me from getting the door open. it opens maybe 1/4 of inch, then stops.
what can i do?

Sounds like the linkage is screwed up or there is a utensil preventing it from opening. Might as well pull the door open and ask questions later, not unless you can figure out a way to unlock the door from its hinges.
