I live in the cold north and I have noticed that I have a small amount of steam coming from my main plumbing vent. I have three smaller vents and can see no steam coming from them. I have not run any water at all for hours and yet I still see steam. Is this normal? It seems to me that I should not see any steam if there is not any hot/warm water running or in any of my traps.

Thanks for any help/advice.

Keep an eye on it. If it starts spitting large amounts of steam for long periods of time replace it or you could just replace it now and get it over with.

Is it steam coming off the water / warm air deep underground in the main line between the house and the street?

Assuming you are on a public sewer system, that vent essentially acts not only as a vent for your house, but he whole system...somebody's running hot somewhere. Unless you have a whole house trap, it goes all the way to the street. If you are on a septic system, same thing...the bacterial action can heat things up some, too.

It is the DWV main on the roof, Been in the house almost 5 years but have never really paid attention until this year with the record snowfall we have had here (9 feet and counting, in less than 3 weeks). And I am on a septic system. I am guessing that I really have nothing to worry about???

Thanks for the replies :)
