I'm dealing with putting in a new p-trap in an old old bathroom and the existing copper piping is 1-3/4." I need to reduce it to 1 1/2" and I can't find reducer couplings anywhere for anything involving 1-3/4." Surely there has to be some way to deal with this. Can anyone help me out? Thanks a lot

copper

That is an interesting problem, because that would only be an air conditioning copper size, and there are NO FITTINGS for drains, or any other plumbing usage, in that size so how could it have been legally installed? IF it is really that size you have to get the reducer from an air conditioning supply house.

I'm sure it wasn't installed to any code that would apply today. Its an old house and none of the units for anything make any sense. It had a 4'-5" tub and 2'-11" wide counter, its like someone 50 years ago decided to play a cruel joke on whatever sucker bought his house.

Anyway, I can't even find 1-3/4 to 1-1/2 inch reducers for anything, let alone plumbing. Is there a way to do custom/adjustable fittings?

You may be looking at the tip of an iceberg. The deeper you get into this job, the more weird things you may find. You might want to rethink your plan to do this yourself.

Thats why I'm trying to put an end to it here with a reducer, I don't want to rip into my walls just to find more of the same pipe that I can't do anything about.

An 1-1/2" copper pipe is 1-5/8" on the outer dimension.

2" copper pipe is 2-1/8" OD

Worst comes to worse, you may need to transition with a rubber coupling.

Or is this a copper p-trap with swivel?
What size pipe is at the wall?

The pipe I'm referring to is at the wall, I cut it off about 4" from the wall since it had corroded. Its 1-3/4" outside dimension 1-5/8" inside. I think I'm going to have to go with a 2" x 1.5" rubber coupling and wedge some rubber washers or sleeves in the bigger end and hope for the best.
