My question is how much capacity is a 4" pvc line capable of handling? I've seen 4" lines going out of apt. buildings, and am wondering what their capacity is.

In Illinois it is a max of 500 fixture units on a 4" pipe. Which is more than enough for most apartment buildings.

You will notice in the chart one peculiarity of geometry. At almost all points on the chart a 4" pipe has approximately twice the capacity of a 3" line.
