I had to start a new thread for
this years contest....

for the award this year, I am going all out
with a 25 dollar gift certificate to ......WHITE CASTLES..

if you are in a region where they are not available, I can
send you the gut bombs federal express, ready to be re-heated in the micro-wave.

What sane plumber can resist White Castles???

I just installed these two little jewels this
satruday morning in a office....

they should have been put on granite,,,,

now please tell me....

is this art or pig slop...??????

personally I think it is pretty butt-ugly

but I was just the plumber.

what do I know about taste??

pay no attention to the
dumb-ass takeing the picture...

I installed a lav faucet like that too for someone.
I had to dial down the supplies or the water would come out too hard.
I would have felt better leaving the stops open and using a restricter.
The next person to fiddle with the shutoffs is going to change the flow that I spent ten minutes on.
Pig Slop or Art?............Thinking............Not in my home. Art, but then I'm not that artistic.

Very strange. Just curious, what type of office?

I dont care that much,
because its is not my home.....

but being in two public restrooms in a Real Estate office
getting used lots every day,
its bound to be trouble just waiting to happen..

they really ought to be in some little 1/2 bath in a big
mansion that never gets that much action...

being a public restroom, Vandalism is in my mind..

and I just dont want to be the poor fellow that has to
unstop the thing if someone decides to hurl in it.....

anyway, the guantlet has now been thrown down...

and I challenge others to post their worst here

I dont want to win this every year

remember the White Castles....

Haven't installed a vessel sink or any real high end plumbing in a long time.

I actually like it because it seems that people think they can spend thousands of dollars buying it, but hundreds installing it.

There are two sources this year, one I abandoned by choice and the other I believe because I don't buy with them, along with a shrinking new construction. I don't miss anything to the idea of dealing with this focus group anymore.

I'll stick to emergencies and normal people. Took me years to figure out how to rail my best targets in plumbing and hone in on it.

Makes life so much easier but sometimes I take a stupid pill just to taste what I don't want to do anymore. Bleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!

actually these almost fell into place, the first one went slow casue I did not know what I was doing..

the second one almost fell in...... in about 30 minutes.....

But you are 100% right about them spending thousnds,

they have no received tha gift yet from me...

my new years resolution this year....the first is to
lose about 25 lbs...and the second is

Staying away from new construction and re-model work

Actually mark I somehow already listed, all I had to do was tweak and add some more information.

But I will however add my other 2 companies to that listing service.

Are stating that when someone goes to maps, that a balloon caption pops up notifying there's a plumber nearby?

Explain in detail how it is generating hits for you. I get Google hits all the time but in a different way.

They type in 3 well known keywords that I've purposely made sure gets me found.

Thanks for the heads-up.

I just don't get the vessel sink concept ... to me they are butt ugly and a nightmare to keep clean ... especially at the countertop. I predict this a silly fad and in less than two years you won't even be able to even buy one ... now how about some real slop.

burleymike
01-04-2009, 09:49 PM
My wife asked me who would want something so stupid. I asked what made it so stupid. She said "you have to clean the inside of the sink and the outside, and all the water spots would be hell." I guess the kind of people that would install one of those would hire somebody else to clean it.

What is next an all glass toilet so you can watch the brown trout swim:D

I for one love vessel sinks; but they are not appropriate for every setting.

Obviously the two that Mark posted are very fugly examples of the wide variety available, as well as the fact that they shouldn't be installed in dinky bathrooms like the ones pictured.

that will work fine till some drunk
figures out how easy it is to kick that
arm , break it off ,
and pour urine out everywhere

looks like they used to have a drain behind the one
and it probably kept stopping up allthe time, so they had to
get creative

hj
01-11-2009, 06:55 AM
It probably stopped up once, and some wino offered to fix it for a bottle of rot gut and the price of the parts. He didn't have his 1/4" hand snake available, or it didn't work, so he did then next best thing. Probably overcharged for the parts also.

Funny thing is that the venting that was put in at the same time is correct. But they couldn't get this right, and were too lazy to cut more cast above and put in an offset?

master plumber mark
01-13-2009, 08:05 PM
that rubber gasket will alst for a few hundred years....

the only thing working in your favor is the fact
it is on a verticle drop and very little sediment can stick to the bend in the rubber gasket.
even though it is sort of half-** its way off the side of the pipe
...

maybe you ought to get a couple of 2x4s and some duct tape and make something like a splint on both sides of the pipe to firm it up better and hold it more straight in place..:D:D.

that picture could win you a prize in this years contest

Thats what I mean they never gave the poor fool any decent advice, then they praise it. The current threads are no better. for example give this a read. http://www.***************.com/f33/gas-line-installation-6348/

I have purchased 2 vent free fireplaces to install in my home. I called a local plumber and was quoted $700.00 to install them. He intends to connect to the line near the furnance ( the only gas appliance in the home ). He will run a seperate line to each fireplace, one in the basement (30,000 BTU) and one on the main floor (10,000 BTU). A total of 35 feet of gas line is needed. My son (an engineer) and I would like to do this ourselves. Where would we purchase the pipe and other material needed and what is the process?
robertk684
Then here is the only reply before mine.

You should be able to run 3/8" copper line which is available at the big box home improvement stores or any good hardware store. You must use flared fittings (not ferrules) and must not have any connections hidden inside a wall.

WOW....copper for gas....ooohhhhkay

Is that legal anywhere?

It was for a little while here in Illinois, it all really falls on the Gas Company to approve it here. What happened there was a government built building where they used copper for the whole building and the State went ape-sh*t. The gas company said they allow it as long as it met certain guidelines. That was back in the 1970's Recently Illinois has not allowed it any more for many reasons.

seaofnames
04-08-2009, 07:25 PM
Actually yes, Copper is ok for gas. It has to be the right type of copper and correct fittings must be used and tested. And we arent talking about anything more than a few psi of pressure either, thats why it is acceptable(at least from what I've seen in the Canadian code).

SewerRatz
04-08-2009, 07:29 PM
Well when it was allowed the joints had to be silvered brazed or flare fittings. But like I said today if an inspector sees copper for gas he will make it get ripped out and replaced with either track pipe or black pipe.

Cute... It's actually hooked up to the drain of the urinal on the floor above....

Well I have an entry but didn't have my camera
This is at my MIL's house, clawfoot tub, shower curtain all around
The vanity mirror has a light on either side
And of course one light is partially behind the tub
And of course that side has the outlet too

I wasn't there when they redid the house - they hired an electrician
No bad on the electrician's part - it was pre-existing
But I would have removed both lights & put a light over the top
Then moved the outlet to the other side of the sink
I'll grab a pic next time I am there

It's not an extreme problem
But only the shower curtain protects her from contact with the outlet :(

She's great, best MIL you could hope for
OK, she's here today.....but I didn't have to type that
She comes up for 2+/- days every week
Sometimes takes our son for the weekend or if we are going somewhere
She would probably be here more, but she lives an hour away & HER mother is 97 & she keeps an eye on her

Good deal!
I have one like that now...

My first one died when the vest she was wearing went off and blew up a bus in some middle eastern country...
Or was it when she drove the passenger airliner she had hijacked into a building.

Is it at least on a GFI circuit?

Scuba_Dave

Yes it's a GFCI outlet, I checked

I wired up (3) CO/smoke alarms a while ago, interconnected & all set
It wasm't tyhat much more $$ to buy 6 of them off **** w/shipping then buy just 3 for my house at HD

Last year I went down & on Easter I ripped all the vines out around her chain link fence. I had been doing little bits here & there in the past. But I told the wife lets go down earlier so I can get the whole thing done

If the customer wouldn't fix that gas valve situation on that water heater, I'd have the local gas utility company out there immediately shutting that service off. Don't care if it was cold or not; hotel room would be safer at that point.

Let me guess; he was valving that down to control flow...?

That black burnoff is pretty indicative of a straight flame.

We know why that shiny new brass valve is in there too; plastic one melted.

I'd rather see pieces of wood in that burner chamber than natural gas. FFS!:D

Back in 2006 a guy mad a post about trying to plumb in a stand pipe drain for his washer. after seeing the end result I just wanted to cry.
http://www.***************.com/f33/drain-washer-1017/

Some one should of told him to just run a drain to the pump pit, or use a pump -in-a-box set up. *wipes away some tears*

LOL!!!!!

They don't seem to mind showing off linkbacks to this site....winning pig slop awards to polish off quite nicely! :p

Some people have no common sense
I can almost see that hook-up
IF the drain pipe was above the washer
Putting it down near the floor makes NO sense whatsoever
And the direction of the flow is just going to push it down into the sump pump pit
Then the sump pump will kick on & push it right back
No thought process there
But a nice drawing :D

I watched the Vimeo of the Grohe faucet install. Handy Hacks. Good grief.

You NEVER use putty on a plastic top. Never.

Teflon on the drain part? Is that all that seals it? Shouldn't need it on a running thread.

Pipe dope on the hose connection? Hope it doesn't eat the rubber that actually makes the seal. Completely unnecessary.

Yes, the mack washer inverted. Too bad the faucet didn't have more parts so they could screw those up, too.

Edited to add: BTW, why a widespread faucet on a 4" center basin?

cwhyu2

They do make 4" spread faucets that depict a wide spread and are a PIA to install.

Found this in a basement today...
I guess that they were too lazy just to tear up
the floor and install a sewage pit.

this is extremely nasty in my opinion

I have never seen anything like this little basement
set up before....seems to be a grinder pump pumping the sewage
out the front of the home to the sewer....

The pump had failed and the container has turned into
something similar to a funkey cesspool or septic tank inside the home..
.............nice smelling too......................

the home-owner is fighting the fellow who installed
the pump over the warranty right now,

but I fear and dread that I am gonna be the poor
dummie fooling with this little turd sometime soon...

or is this a for real product used by many???

No other posts, hmmmmm I guess this thread has
been laying dormant for way too long......
or everyone is on vacation this month......

it does sort of make you want to hurl....

they wont be able to sell the house with
this piece of junk inthe basement...

it has also occured to me...

they have a bathroom in the basement too!!!!

the downstairs bathroom must go to that
open sump pump pit next to the box and then pump
up and then into the sewage bin....

It aint ever gonna pass inspection when they try to sell this
home and it is presently on the market...

My next question

What is it worth to tear up the whole basement and install
a large sewage pit and pump ,
tie in the downstairs bathroom to it
and basically cleanup this whole mess....????

I wont touch it for less than 10k...no, make that 15.....

fear and dread in Indianapolis continues

this artwork installed by some handy that is actually on angies list .
some sort of handy man service..

I call this "old faithful" cause every time the laundry shoots down that floor drain, the drain probably wont be able take the load on it and it will blow up through the condensation trap on the furnace and will spew out and hit the cieling...

well....maybe not as high as the ceiling, but it will be a pretty sight to see

or it will push water back up into the drain line on the culligan unit
which is an illegal cross connection.....
this guy really worked hard on this.....:D:D:D

How did this service call come through? Was it like that for a while, or, was it a work in progress? No air gap on the dishwasher drain too?

Herk
09-09-2009, 08:47 PM
The dishwasher drain doesn't require an air gap here. It does, however, require a high loop and I fastened it to the bottom of the counter.

The reason I got the service call is because hubby is gone, the sheets are split, and the lady was trying to plunge the sink. She had filled the sink with dishwashing compound and then tried to plunge and the two corrugated pipes burst apart. Would have been fun to watch her scrambling to clean it up.

I should have taken a pic of the fix - basically hard piping the vent and using a disposer waste into a single trap. Unfortunately, the pipe going down still remains 1-1/2" but that's under concrete floor. I don't know if you can see it in the picture, but the drain comes up through the cabinet about a foot from the back wall.

No pictures as it's not readily photographed, but picture this:

A basement floor "drain" consisting of nothing more than a 4" hole cut through the slab. The hole leads into a horizontal channel that is presumably connected to the weeping tiles. Sandy soil visible through the drain hole. No trap. I could feel air blowing up out of the drain and the smell of soil was rather strong.

From all appearances, this abomination was cut when the house was built.

The worst part is that there's a real under-slab drain line less than 6' away.

Code enforcement, here?

Terry

The picture on the left was how we found the drain,
The picture on right is how we wound up running it.

From seeing the other work out there, it was obvious that the lady of the house wasn't used to paying for skilled work.

No pics, but here's the story: This guy walked into the local hardware store whereI work part time, looking for "clawfoot tub drain parts". (He wanted a bath shoe, only.) Turned out he was trying to clear a lady's drain and couldn't open the drum trap (did'nt own a pipe wrench.) So he figured on taking the drain apart and knew it would break in the process. When we told him the snake would never get through the trap, he bought a 1/2 gallon of Assault drain cleaner, which is sulfuric acid. An hour later he's back, saying black foam had poured up out of the drain. "How long was it taking to drain empty?" I asked. "About three or four hours." When I told him that meant the pipe was just about packed solid, he bought a trap lid and a drill bit.His plan was to drill and break out the old lid and shopvac the acid thru the drum trap. Great plan. Her next bath will be hotter than she realizes. And yes, I told him that, too.
