connecting drain to lead pipe

Hello,

The other day I decided to replace the old vanity in my bathroom. However I have run into an issue. The house is a 80 year old house. The old metal drain is soldered to a lead pipe. Photos are attached. I am not sure what the best way would be to connect the new drain. The pipe OD of the metal drain pipe is 1 1/4". It appears that the lead pipe OD is slightly larger. Any suggestions on how to approach will be much appreciated.

The safest and easiest way is to call an old plumber who knows how to solder the new trap to the lead.

a possible idea from someone who knows no better

If the chrome pipe is sound, you can cut the bend off leaving a nice straight length. Then a slip fit 1-1/4 pipe length will fit over that and reach to your trap. Look for a chrome pipe with a nut and polyethylene washer at one end at your local plumbing mart.

Many around here would pooh-pooh that bottle trap in your photo. Do you need to use that trap? Because if you could go with a standard trap, there may be no need to muck with the trap arm at all.

you would never catch me soldering that lead joint
back together...aint no way.......



all you got to do is get a hack saw.
.or sawzall with a steel cutting blade.


and cut that lead off right behind that lip...
you might have to open up the drywall a little bit...
but it looks like you got plenty of room


then all you have to do is go get a 1 1/4 grey fernco coupling..

grease the lead up with some pipe dope...


then slide the fernco fitting half way onto the pipe and clamp it down tight..

then simply put the arm of your new pvc trap into the
other end of the fernco...with some pipe dope on it and.

clamp it down...


very simple , very easy....
