Suddenly today I have no pressure on my hot water line. Cold water pressure is okay. Tank heats up okay and I do get hot water but only a trickle.

The heater is a GSW , model 6G40NVH-02. Is there a flow control valve in the tank?

I tried draining the tank a bit but did not close the cold water inlet. If I closed the inlet and drained some of the tank is it possible it would unstick?

Is it all your fixtures?
Did you check the shut off at the tank? Could be closed a little.
draining the tank is not a bad thing. Is the tank old?
I would find it odd that draining it would fix your problem. The inlet or out lit fittings could be clogged.

1) same at every fixture
2)shut off is wide open
3) tank is 2 years old

What kind of shut offs do you have? The levers or knobs.
If it is the knobs a washer could be clogging the line some place.

you should really have full flow ballvalves. If you have globe valves that's possible what MR. Geek said. It could also be that first 90 out of the water heater.Maybe you have to replace piping up to the first branch connection. If cold is fine try backflushing.

1) Shut off cold inlet to water heater

2) open up laundry tub (if you have one)hot side

3) go to each fixture and proceed backflush: If at a sink unscrew arator, put a dime in there and screw it back on, open hot and then open cold water should be divertated to open source at L.T. If pressure is great enough it may push obstuction thru. If at bathtub or shower, take shower head off, use 1/2" threaded cap and screw it on to shower arm. If shower only turn on and divert cold thru hot. If tub/shower combo do the same but lift diverter on spout or faucet and push it thru the hot. If this does not work you may have to replace some piping.;)

Most codes specify full port full open valves for water heaters, branch supply lines and the house main.

Update

Turns out this unit has a check valve in cold water inlet. Stuck partially shut due to minerals in the water. Service guy told me they only put it in these tanks for a couple of years. Removed cold water tube, took out vale and replace tube. Everything a-okay. Best part, no charge.
