And where do you find software? Which websites do you use to download design tools?

I don't necessarily want all the free software in the world.
A lot of "free" software comes with spyware that trashes your computer!
I get mine from
http://www.download.com
There they are on the lookout for spyware infestations in their downloads.

Opensource communities

I'm a big fan of the open source community. Almost all the software I use is free, and a few platforms I run businesses on. If you can be specific in what type of applications you are looking for, I may be able to suggest stable products that are free.

Have you got any open source programs that are similar to MS Powerpoint that can open powerpoint files or, create files that powerpoint can open?

Thanks Macman!
A friend was looking for a powerpoint type program last night and this would fit the bill...

Wilson,
I think if you are referring to this post, I really do think, he was making a joke! What is it that people can't understand a joke anymore. Wow, the world is so serious. If you think, that sucks, you should try some other things I could list that really sucks for sure. It was a joke and it was funny. Appreciate humor, it is more important than money.

While there are exceptions, most things that are free are worth every penny that you pay for them. ;)

This site has been very helpful to me over the past couple of days. (It was also a little painful as I kept reading past my eyestrain limit.) Anyway, working with computers is my primary profession so I figured I should give back a little on this thread. Here are some of the places I look for free software:

General stuff:
http://pricelessware.org/thelist/index.htm
http://www.nonags.com/
http://sourceforge.net/ (for the adventurous - many beta and early development stuff here)

Anti-virus: http://free.avg.com/
If you would like to support them, they do offer a paid version.

I do not like Symantec for the home user. I do hear good things about NOD32 from eset.
