a friend dropped a bar of soap and flushed it about a day and a half ago, now the toilet won't flush and the water level just rises and will then drain off. what is the best way to deal with this problem?

You can probably use a toilet auger, plumber's snake or even a coat hanger to break up the soap so it will flush down. Barring (pardon the pun) that, depending on its location in the toilet trap, it should eventually dissolve.

Borrow or rent a toilet auger or snake! Yes, the bar of soap will dissolve eventually, but think how long it takes to use an entire bar of soap in your shower when you are actually using it... Is your wife willing to wait longer than that..? A few minutes will make you a hero, even for just a little while.

soap

Depending on the bar's size and shape, it is either caught before it leaves the trap, in which case a piece of wire may dislodge it, or it is at the outlet of the toilet and you will have to remove the toilet to retrieve it. Soap dissolves very slowly and if water is not flowing past it, it doesn't dissolve at all.
