Woodford Model 17 vale stem leak

My model 17 woodford is leaking from the valve stem. Can the valve packing be replaced?

Yes it can and it should be commonly available.

Just tighten the packing nut a 1/4 to 1/2 a turn, should stop the leak.


Expect the handle to be harder to turn though.


Packing over time forms a memory to the stem and when not in use for long periods of time, going from inactivity to activity will cause a leak around the stem.
