A little over a year ago we installed a new shower with
pan and drain. The drain is PVC and was clogged. The owner
poured a liquid drain cleaner down the pipe and slowly the
water drained down. She told me that when the water filled up
in the shower it started leaking in the ceiling below so I removed
the drain cover to see that the PVC drain pipe was actually
degrading or melting. I can stick a screwdriver right into the sidewall
of the pipe. I called the company that makes the drain cleaner
and they assured me it was not the drain cleaner.
Is there a chemical in shampoo or soap or some other cleaning
product that would eat away at PVC like that??
