i have a brand new 2 and a half brass check valve.inside there is a spring and also a nut.is this nut supposed to be loose or tightened up how does this work

Usually the nut is a self locking type and can not come loose or off. and it is tightened for the just right spring load.

IIRC most check valves have a 5 psi cracking pressure rating but... you don't need to know what pressure they open at, they just do their thing. I have no idea how you would 'adjust' one and get it right without measuring how much pressure it takes to open it.
