Ugly Toilet Gizzards

My husband and I are finally facing up to the need to replace a toilet with a cracked tank.

But all the new toilets we've seen have these funny, gizzard shapes behind the pedastal. It looks like the surfaces are going to collect all kinds of dust and grime. What's worse, they're going to be hard to reach down there behind the seat. Our older, water-waster toilets don't expose the shapes of the water passages that way.

Is there any way to avoid this design, other than making a silly little toilet skirt?
Is there a functional purpose to this design? :eek:

I was going to spend the extra few bucks to buy a skirted toilet design from Toto, which also flushs well, but then I realized that the ugliest part of my toilet is what I put inside it. Thank you.

Some toilets are designed with a "full skirt" that is smooth instead of the "gizzard neck" design. Clearly the gizzards are designed by people who never have to actually clean a toilet. :rolleyes:

I saw a Cimarron up close and personal for the first time Saturday. It was on an elevated platform at a big box store. Ugly??!?!?!??? Not only does it have a "gizzard," it looks like it has the liver, the back, and the neck, among its visually unappealing aesthetics.
