Just found your site; very cool!

See lots of put downs on big box home stores (e.g. home depot) but how do I find alternatives in my area (portland, or)? Looking for plumbing supplies primarily.

Thanks!

Yellow pages would do it. A city the size of Portland, there must be a few large plumbing supply houses.

plumbing supplies

Just be forewarned, that many plumbing supply stores will, and should, only sell to licensed plumbing contractors. And the ones that do sell to the public may, and should, sell their products at a higher price than they charge their licensed contractor customers. We have a low opinion of the quality of materials handled by the DIY suppliers, but that should normally be the only option available to the DIYer.

One of the big suppliers here in SD north of 8 has a retail store over the counter. They charge homeowners list, or give them 5 to 10% off list, depending on how much you buy and what kind of mood the counter guy is in. Contractors get typically 15 to 25 % off list, 40% on certain items if you are a regular.

Thanks for the tips. Knew about George Morlan (and A-Boy too) but wasn't hip to Ferguson's; will have to ck them out.

Thanks again!

I dunno...Down here Ferguson doesn't like homeowners, they only deal with contractors. But I guess every place is different.

gdog,

I'm north of you in Vancouver (WA). My usual location to try is Grovers on 78th in Vancouver (between I-5 and I-205). Probably not much better than Aboy or George Morelan though.

I have a keller and ferguson account and even with my discount the prices are significantly higher than the big box stores. For example I picked up a 1.5" abs y for $1.86 at HD where my ferguson price was $2.89 (and that is with a 62% discount off list). Both were domestic products.

HD is a pain and they never have what you need, but they are cheap. Ferguson is close and convenient and they usually have what you need, but you pay a premium.

Thanks for more tips.

Am getting ready to replace meter to house supply line, so looking for either 3/4" or 1" soft copper. Didn't see it at my local HD but I'll check and see if they can get it.

The 1" is 5 bucks and change a foot at Ferguson's, but I don't have an account there either.

Thanks again.
