we purchased the house about a month ago, come last night my wife heard the toilet making an unusual sound then normal and i found that it was filling up and hissing at us. the valve will not shut off at the floor and when i pull up the ballcock it also does not shut off...it just takes 10 more minutes to fill up.

as you can see in the pictures I've had to prop it up with a wire clothes hanger so the ballcock wont fill it up any faster. eventually it gets to the over flow and slowly seeps in. Any way to fix this or should i go buy a new kit or what? I have no way of testing the pressure in the house, if its any consolation the other faucets haven't changed in water pressure. any help would be appreciated.

For what they cost, replace the ballcock.

You can try cleaning out the diaphram, but they are a headache to pull apart for the DIY'er

Your fill valve is not shutting off. This is one of the easiest repairs known to man. Turn off the water under the toilet, 1/8th turn counter clockwise on the top cap. Replace the $2 rubber seal inside. Done deal.

Just a note: that little black tube.....make sure the end of it does not push into the overflow to a point below that waterline mark. It will siphon the tank if it does.

well jimbo i cannot turn the valve off under the toilet, it's a 1/4 turn it says on it and when i do nothing at all happens, the water will not turn off.

Well , you need to find a main turn off for the water to the house. That rig you have inside the toilet is still leaking, and will only get worse.

While you have the main supply shut off, replace the shutoff for the toilet. You sure want to be able to shut the toilet off without having to shutoff the entire house.

Just a thought, but you are turning the stop only a quarter turn aren't you? Don't move it past the 3 o'clock position. If the handles are put on upside down, the stops can come out of line and the handle will turn more than a quarter without fully cutting the supply.

I ordered a Watts like that and I had to take the handle off and turn it around. I am buying Chinese thin brass next time. Better build quality. Oops silly me, Watts are made in China!
