Hi,

I have a shower drain that I think is not vented correctly. If not, I'd like to fix it.

The shower drain pipe is at the far right of the picture. The vent runs horizontally in the basement, so this is where I think the problem is.

My proposed solution is in red. I would move the trap up and run the drain into a 4x4x2 wye (is that correct?). That big pipe running from the top of the picture is for a toilet, and can pretty easily be turned to accommodate the new fittings. If I do this, the main vent will be 5 feet from the new trap which I think is OK for 2 inch pipe.

Thanks,
Brian

From what I can see your shower is vented perfectly. Your "solution" would eliminate the vent and create problems. The only real problem I see is that in the event of a stoppage all the water will overflow out of the washer's "P" trap and flood the basement.

Hi,

That sounds great! I was thinking that the vent could not run horizontally until > 6 inches above the fixture.

It shouldn't but even that is a simplification of the actual code specification. But having a horizontal vent such as yours may be, is preferable to not having any as in your revision.
