Shower floor without a liner???

I have 2 conflicting views and would like some opinions on this. My current situation is I have a shower with a plywood floor, on top of that the plumber has a sloped morter bed with backer board on top of that up to the drain and is planning on installing the tile on top of that.

- Talking to the noble company (makers of the CPE liner). I was told I should rip it out, create a regular sloped bed without using the backerboard, put in a new drain that allows for the drain ring to clamp onto a membrane (pvc or cpe). and install the membrane. They said the morter will eventually leak as will the backer board and morter bed (this is on the second floor)

- The tile installer has installed showers successfully with the sloped morter bed and backerboard. And has not heard of any leak problems.

Just wondering what other people's thoughts are as I have no idea about this stuff

If your tile guy and plumber are building a shower for you without a liner you need to fire them from the job! Its that simple!

He will be hearing about them at some point... Do you want to be the one telling him?

In no way does that construction technique follow any national guidelines or industry standards!

I'll second it...tear it out and either find someone who knows what they are doing, or learn about it and do it yourself!

Check out www.johnbridge.com. In their Liberry (sic), they have some drawings and instructions on an industry standard technique. Note, there is more than one way to build one correctly, but many more on how to do it wrong, and yours is wrong on SO many features!

Personally, I like Kerdi from www.schluter.com. If you go to their site, you can watch a video of how their system works. A traditional preslope, liner, setting bed system works fine, too. And there are other approved methods, but not the one your guy is using.
