Went to South AFrica and Namibia last month- everywhere were dual flush toilets- small button for small flush, larger for larger flush- are there any conversion kits for US toilets?

are there any conversion kits for US toilets?
In a word, no. "US toilets" encompasses a huge population of devices which can use anywhere from 1.28 gpf (maybe less this week) to over 6 gpf. The entire toilet -- tank, flush mechanism, and bowl -- is engineered as one system, and any simple "conversion kit" can't cover all the bases -- flush rate, volumes, etc. Some of the old toilets need a couple of gallons just to initiate the flush. Even among modern toilets, you can't even replace the tank (for example) and hope to get adequate performance using the old bowl. (Exception: Toto seems to have done something like this with their "Eco" Drake (1.28gpf), which several people have reported looks an awful lot like a standard Drake (1.6gpf)).

The best way to accomplish this is to buy a Toto Aquia or other toilet designed for dual-flush.

But you can buy dual flush toilets here in the US as an option (if you cannot convert).

First, I am not aware of such a kit, and the reason may be that toilets in general are not "friendly" to any kind of conversion. They are built to flush in a certain way, and may not function well if you "mess with it".

California already has a law on the books starting the phase in to what are called 'Ultra Low Flush' toilets. This is defined as 1.28 gPF, and can be achieved as an average. 1.6 for "#2" and maybe 1.0 for "#1". They calculate the average based on a ratio of about 3 ones for each two.

These doulbe button toilets are available on the market today.
