Recently, I had an estimate done for the following:
Drywall (1/4" to cover wallpaper) all walls of family room, which is 32' x 16.' There is a regular sized sliding patio door centered on one wall, a bay window on one long wall (approx. 90" x 60") and the other long wall has a huge rock mantle (approx. 1/3 of the total length of the wall and floor to ceiling.)
It will be completely finished and painted.
Also, crown molding will be installed.
The quote was $2385, or (with no painting done) $1945
What do you think of this quote?
We live in upstate New York.

I hope the illegal aliens you are hiring for this have good skills for drywall, paint, and crown moulding. It sounds to me like the labor portion of this would figure out at less than $10 per hour. If you are comfortable with the skill level of someone working for that, go for it.

How high are the ceilings and what are they going to do about the existing window, door, and baseboard trim?

I would paint it myself. I have never seen a contractor do as good a job as me (I have the time, they do not).

What are the existing walls - drywall, plaster ?

Just wondering why the decision to cover wallpaper with 1/4" drywall as opposed to just removing the wallpaper ? Covering with 1/4" wouldn't be my first choice. As far as I know, 1/4" needs to be glued on. Glueing onto wallpaper may have problems down the road.

What is their plan to deal with the window and door jambs that will now be 1/4" shallow ?

Don't know about the price - probably not too far off assuming they deal well with the window and door issues. I'd do painting myself.

Yeah I also have all kinds of questions. You'd need to re-do all the trim work in that room. You'd also have fur out any doorways. If you have walk ways you can get past those with additional corner bead. If you're sliding glass doors are made of wood you can fur them out but if they are aluminum, vinyl or fiberglass then how would you do it?

I'd also be weary of the price.

I would let them glue the boards up. That wouldn't be a good idea. Also that stone fireplace is going to require a very skilled hand or a large countour guage to get the contour right.

If you decide to do the painting yourself get them to do a primer coat. At least you won't be fixing thier drywall.

WOW thats a really impressive price. Like the others have said thats way to cheap to be legit. Its really up to you if you are willing to accept the risk of low quality work and/or uninsured illegal workers

I saw a thing on the nightly news about the need for skilled carpenters and its no wonder no one is being attracted to this trade at those rates.

When I find guys like that I do my best to promptly put the out of business. I report them to every agency in existence to make their life miserable. I work had to be professional and provide my clients with high quality products and services and I chagre enough to make a living and retire some day. People who give out prices like that make it very hard for me to make a legitimate living in this industry

Thanks for all the replies...I have used this contractor before...last year, he did my bathroom...He is a young man, just starting out. He does good carpentry work, so I know his work. I have also had friends of mine who have used him for bigger jobs...one of those was an entire basement..she had her house built, but had left the basement just studded...and, the following year, she had this young man, and his workers completely finish the basement..walls, floors, bathroom, etc. She is thrilled with the results, and she is not an easy person to impress!! Anyway, I trust his skills...
Now, to answer some of the questions...The thought of taking all of that wallpaper down is what prompted me to ask him about putting up drywall...I might see if the wallpaper would come down fairly well, though, before I have him do the work...I have hesitated to do that because I didn't want to see terrible walls, if it came off hard...but if he can cover it up, I guess I should attempt removal first...
As far as the door...we are replacing the sliders with french doors (the same contractor will do it) and he is putting in hardwood floors too...I don't know what happens to the trim of the window...and I have wondered how the drywall would look around the rock....
So..thank you to everyone who answered...I am definitely going to check to see how this wallpaper comes off, first...if it leaves the walls a mess, I guess he would maybe repair them fairly cheaply for me...He is a good worker...
I will let you know how I make out with the wallpaper!!
