Need to replace bathtub drain. Can this be done while the tub is in? There may be a small leak in the drain pipe seals. I failed at turning the main tub drain and broke off the x at the bottom. Now I'm wondering if I can just replace the entire assembly & the lifter that holds the bucket/stopper/overflow. Any thoughts?

yes you can ...if you are tough enough.....

if you can gain access to the back or cut the drywall and make yourself an access where the
assembly is , it is not that big a problem...

probably you will need a small cold chisel to knock the
tub shoe loose and some WD 40 .....

the rest is not that difficlut.

drain

1. Find out if there is actually a leak and if so where.
2. Remove the strainer that you broke the "X" out of.
3. Unless the leak is in the drain's concealed piping, replace the gaskets and the strainer.
4. Recheck for leaks.

If wrenches and chisels do not loosen the drain, I suggest that you cut off the tub drain from below with a sawzall while someone grips the part in the tub with a closet pole. The idea is to not chip the porcelain.
