View Full Version : Tub On a Slab Installation

I want to install a Tub / Shower in my basement and need some help with the drain installation in the slab. (I have done a lot of plumbing on my own, built 3 houses and plumbed them myself but have never done a slab tub installation.) I have a wall that is accessable from the utility room where the plumbing will be exposed. I will trench from the tub drain trap to an existing floor drain area and tie in to the sewer line that is located in the utility room. Distance is around 2 to 3 feet so I do not think I need a Vent. I will probably buy a one piece fiberglass unit because I have 3' doors and should be able to get it in to the bathroom without a problem I hope!
Questions:
1: Do I need a Vent? I can go up through the exposed wall and tie in at the ceiling level.
2: I would like to see a cross section / diagram of a typical Slab installation showing me how this is installed.
3:I also have a question as to PVC or Brass Tub Drain Kit. Advantages of one over the other?
4: Trench dimensions and or details from the tub trap cut out and under the wall trench cut out. Access for maintenece in the future.
5: Do I have options for different types of traps?

Thanks in advance:

Jim

Thanks to Hj and Jimbo's responce. You have given me a lot to think about. I think I will use plastic as it is less expensive and should be easy to work with. I think I will also tile the surround and use a standard tub. It will probably look better anyway and a lot easier to install and may also less expensive. I have a tile wet saw and enjoy doing tile projects so I think I am almost ready to get started. Thanks again. You have been a big help and I appreciate advice from the pro's.

You migth just squeeze a one piece tub shower through a 36" door. Maybe. You would have to remove the door, and possibly the stops. I hope you do not plan to turn this in any way or surely you are not proposing to take it down a flight of stairs. These units are usually installed BEFORE THE WALLS are erected.

A properly installed brass waste/overflow will usually outlast the tub. A properly installed glue-up ABS or PVC would last forever, + or -,

1. Yea
2. No such thing. Every job can be different.
3. Either one, but the plastic one is easier to adjust for misalingments.
4. Whatever you need to work on it. The deeper it is the wider the trench has to be.
5. "types"? No. materials yes, depending on what you are working with.
