How to remove drain cover mounting

One of our showers has a tile floor. The drain was improperly installed. The fitting for the cover sits on top of the tile instead of level with the floor or recessed. This creates a barrier to water flow, so we have to mop the floor after each shower.

The plastic around the outer edge is very brittle, but the center part is solid. How can I remove this fitting? It doesn't unscrew -- or at least not any way I've tried. The black drain below is ABS. I reached in and noticed a bit of a gap between the white fitting and the black ABS.

I figured I'd replace the white fitting with a snap-in drain cover that's level or below the floor and seal with good-quality silicone caulk.

Thanks

As you've guessed, that is not the right drain for a tiled application. It also appears that the thing is not sealed to the drain pipe, either!

I don't know of any successful means to solve this problem without tearing some things up. It's unlikely that there's a liner under there as well (unless I'm all wet).

You may want to post this over at www.johnbridge.com where they specialize in tiling and showers are a big part of it.

Thanks. I posted a message at johnbridge. We moved in only a few months ago and there are many projects with higher priorities than rennovating this bathroom so I guess we'll stick with mopping for at least a few years. I was hoping I could find a simple fix. Oh well....
