I have a gould 1/2 jet deep well [horizontal pump]. The bareings ar shot.
I would like better water pressure than I have now.
Can I go to a bigger hp pump and will that improve the pressure? [ my well guy said something about not going up in hp because off what is in the base of the well...what did he mean???] What about a cp pump?
If a cp pump, which Goulds?
My water tank is 80 gal, but does not have a bladder.
I need to add air several times a year.
What would you suggest for all?
thanks, pat

Guest, is me posting questions that I get from emails.
I post the question, and email the link back so they can read answers.
Sometimes, they even get bold enough, to sign up and start posting on their own.

But when you see Guest, that is what is happening.

As is often the case, the first post doesn't contain enough information to give a good answer to the question.

If the deep well jet pump is to be replaced with a deep well jet pump to provide more pressure it would be good to know the depth to water and size of pipes in the well. It may be possible to specify a different pump that would improve the pressure, but maybe not with the same efficiency.

If there is an option of replacing the jet, then it may be possible to make a better selection.

Is the pump using a two-pipe jet system or a packer system?

Is the well big enough to replace the pump with a submersible? Is it at least 3", and ideally at least 4" well?

Is the objective to make it work at moderate cost, or is it worth spending a litte more to get more pressure and/or flow?

An Engineer's Approach:
It is likely that a larger pump would not have a Goulds-specified nozzle and venturi pair that would match what is in the well. However, it is likely that a larger pump would produce more driving flow at higher pressure and would produce more water at higher pressure. If that is the only alternative, then maybe someone from Goulds would make a recommendation.

The solution would probably not be as efficient as a well-matched system, and there is a risk that there isn't a lot of life in the jet that is in the well.

If it were my well I would not hesitate to try it and I think it would work. However, a professional well man might not want to be bothered.

I would want the answers to the questions above before making a specific recommendation.

Terry: There is a lot of value in the exchange of ideas on the forum, and the opportunity for others to add ideas. I suspect it will be hard to give good answers without some means of two-way discussion. If it is not possible for the inquirer to sign up and post, then I can discuss matter by email.

You will certainly get more pressure by adding a larger pump, it's the volume that will not be much better. The nozzle and venturi combination were matched to the pump when installed (hopefully). Just like BobNH said, there will be more drive which will add value to the system, but not as much as putting the right combination in the jet to match the pump. And I like his idea of putting in a submersible instead of another jet.

I always thought in the back of my mind, when someone asks "is it hard to change a pump" the answer should always be "Yes".
