Quick one: 1-/2 PVC through 2x4 walls?

As the title asks:

"Is it possible to run 1-1/2" PVC through 2x4 walls?"

Is it common?

If it were not possible, we would never be able to install our plumbing systems, and therefore it is not only possible but extemely common. We also do it with 2" where necessary.

Always use the stud guards to add the support back and to protect the pipe. They make them to fit the pipe and they probably add more strength than you take away by drilling the hole. I like the hole to be a little big and use fire caulk, cuts down on squeeks.

The UBC allows a hole not greater than 40% of the stub width in bearing walls, 60% in non bearing walls, with the hole being at least 5/8" from the edge of the stud.

We use 2006 IRC and drilling holes can be tough, but the inspectors do allow for larger holes than allowed structurally, in some situations as long as you protect the pipe and add the support back you took away. We can never touch a floor,or roof truss though, that requires an engineer.
